Before the Ring and Proposal
Sam and Alison met four years ago at a wine event that they both attended. Sam approached her to ask her name. They spent the rest of the night talking and laughing. Sam took Alison to a scenic overlook of Sandy Hook Bay and reminisced about their first day on the water together on Sam’s boat. “That was the day I knew I loved her and wanted us to be together forever. I got down on one knee and the rest is history.” said Sam.

Block Island Because.....
“We didn’t just want a destination wedding. We wanted a Block Island wedding. Sam’s family has been coming to Block Island every summer for the last 35 years and he introduced it to me three years ago and I fell in love with its laid back charm.”

Wedding Day and Design
Prior to the ceremony, Alison recalls  the special moments she had with her four soon-to-be stepchildren. “It was important to me to express my love and devotion to them privately before the ceremony. I cried tears of joy all day but these conversations really pulled on my heartstrings!” The wedding ceremony was held at Payne’s Dock on Sam’s parents’ 1952 Army T-Boat The General. Deciding to change things up, the couple had a cocktail hour prior to the ceremony at Mahogany Shoals, which was a hit with the guests. Everyone was able to mingle, have a drink and when it was time, guests were escorted down the dock by the music of bag pipes. When asked what the highlight from their ceremony was, the answer was “the kiss, definitely the kiss!” After Alison and Sam were pronounced husband and wife, a celebratory three gun salute off the boat was fired with The General’s antique signal guns — a 20 year tradition of Sam’s family that honors “colors” during the Block Island sunset.
    Favors included Alison’s mother’s homemade blackberry jam inserted into canvas tote bags with “Block Island Love” printed on them. The reception was held at the Upstairs Room at Payne’s Dock, and they decided to serve passed hors d’oeuvres, as opposed to a sit down dinner. Catered by Rebecca’s Dockside, everyone raved about the mini lobster rolls and bacon wrapped scallops.


The Wedding Weekend
A lot of the guests had never been to Block Island, so Sam and Alison encouraged them to make a long weekend out of it. The couple created a wedding website with very detailed information on how to get to the island and options for where to stay.  A welcome party was held the evening before the wedding at Kimberly’s and Alison notes that “Our original venue fell through two weeks before the wedding! Kimberly was so amazing, she took us in and made a delicious barbecue spread with only days to prepare.”

 

Top 3 Pieces of advice:
1.    Get your invitations out early so your guests can start reserving their accommodations. The inn’s fill up quickly.
2.    Arrive at least four days prior to your wedding and stay a few days after. There is lots to do.
3. Remember that this is an island and “Island time” is a real thing. Exercise your patience.
