Before the Ring and Proposal
Jessica and Justin met at The Cheesecake Factory in Providence where the pair were working together, but in different departments. They didn’t officially start hanging out until each joined the co-ed cheesecake softball team, and then dated for over eight years! After a job relocation and move to Wisconsin, the pair returned home to R.I. on Father’s Day for a small family get together at Justin’s aunt and uncle’s. While surrounded by family, Justin dropped to one knee and proposed to Jessica.
Block Island Because……
Brad and Anne Marthens, the owners of the Atlantic Inn, are Justin’s aunt and uncle. It was a place the couple always wanted to have their wedding at. This made it very special for them and their family members.
The Day and Design
The ceremony and reception were held on the lawn at the Atlantic Inn. Jessica incorporated many DIY touches such as painted, and decorated, recycled wine bottles and mason jars, and table numbers made out of recycled wine corks. Jessica’s dad made two sets of corn hole, while she painted them and friends helped sew the bean bags. Jessica painted quotes onto pieces of wood for her bridesmaids along with a meaningful picture and seashells glued on for a beachy touch. When a beautiful mist fell over the island, their photographer pulled Jessica and Justin aside to take, what turned out to be, the most magical, gorgeous pictures they had ever seen. With a raw bar that was a favorite of many, everyone raved about the food and the Funfetti wedding cake. Jessica and Justin recall that everything that happened that night was something to remember — line dancing, laughing, crying, hugging and kissing — they grew even closer as a couple and as a family.
The Wedding Weekend
Jessica and Justin set up a wedding website with room suggestions for friends and family and blocked rooms for guests. They set up ferry schedules so the guests could plan accordingly, as well as the alternative plan — just in case of any weather issues. Weekend events were held at one location so nobody had to leave or drive anywhere.
What was the most Block Islandy thing about your wedding?
“Going off alone to take pictures on the beach.”
Top 3 pieces of advice:
1. Choose the Atlantic Inn and our photographer Mia.
2. Book car transportation to and from at least 4 months in advance (plan on packing 2 cars if you’ve done a lot of DIY)
3. Definitely go a few days early to relax.
